Cinema foyer as a background for constantly evolving happenings.
Extensive foyer of one of the biggest independent cinemas in Europe, arranged in contemporary building, that functioned previously as a typical multiplex cinema. As a 9-room cinema and movie arthouse, New Horizon Cinema carries out an extensive program connecting all activities associated with the film and its promotion – so not only the screenings, but also movie festivals, discussions and educational programs.
Many of those events are happening in the three-storey foyer of the theater, where the cinematic life is happening every day. This area involved the implementation of huge changes, before the cinema could reopen for business.
Our task was to develop a strategy of functional reorganization, renovation and new arrangement of the foyer.
Having in mind the variety of activities which cinema holds, we assumed that the space should be treated with spatial and functional freedom, with possibility for changing the space for each event needs.
We wanted to create a place, where the user’s intuition and his present needs are determining the space, that surrounds him. That’s why we made the decision to create an equipment as various, mobile, modal and easy-to-change, as it might be needed for any purpose.
Due to the nature of the project – alternative, independent feeling and limited budget for the entire project – the design process and the renovations were shortened in time to an absolute minimum. Interior design and equipment project was created in the time of four weeks, while the renovation took us just six days.
In addition to improve the entire process – we chose the materials that are not very obvious for use in interiors, but what was more important in that case – are inexpensive and easily available. We also decided to design and develop most of the pieces of equipment by ourselves and to order them from local craftsman and producers.
